Stop Motion Animation Help

Get help creating animations with Stop Motion Animator.

Brush Ninja Stop Motion lets you create animations by capturing one photo at a time using your camera. It works well for paper cut-outs, LEGO, toys, clay, classroom projects, and simple tabletop animation.

The app is designed to be quick to learn:

  • start the camera
  • capture a frame
  • move your subject a little
  • capture again
  • preview the result
  • export as a GIF

Getting Started

  1. Open the Stop Motion Animator.
  2. Tap or click the preview canvas or the Start Cam button in the timeline.
  3. Allow camera access if your browser asks.
  4. Place your subject in front of the camera.
  5. Press Add + to capture a frame.
  6. Move your subject slightly and capture again.
  7. Press play to preview your animation.
  8. Use Export to download your finished GIF.

How the App Works

The large preview area shows either the live camera view or the currently selected frame.

The timeline at the bottom stores your captured frames. Each new frame is added before the green capture button, so you can control where new images are inserted by moving that button.

The toolbar at the top gives you quick access to:

  • New to clear the current animation
  • Export to download your GIF
  • Undo and Redo to reverse recent changes
  • Settings to change the watermark text

Timeline Controls

Each frame in the timeline can be edited directly.

  • Click a frame to select it
  • Drag a frame to move it to a new position
  • Drag the green capture button to change where new frames will be inserted
  • Use the duplicate button to copy a frame
  • Use the trash button to delete a frame

Above each frame is a duration control shown as x1, x2, x3, and so on.

  • x1 means the frame is shown for its normal length
  • x2 means the frame is shown for twice as long
  • x3 means the frame is shown for three times as long

This is useful when you want a pause in the animation without capturing the same frame multiple times.

Onion Skin

Onion skin helps you line up your next shot by showing the previous frame as a faint overlay.

  • It currently shows 1 previous frame
  • It is visible in live camera preview
  • It is visible when a frame is selected
  • It is disabled during playback so you only see the finished animation

This makes it easier to create smooth movement from one frame to the next.

Playback Speed

Use the speed button in the controls area to open the frame-rate settings.

The frame rate changes how many frames are shown per second:

  • lower numbers make the animation slower
  • higher numbers make the animation faster

You can combine frame rate with per-frame duration to fine-tune the timing of your animation.

Watermark Settings

The app includes a credits watermark by default: #brushninja

Open Settings in the top toolbar to change it.

  • Enter new text to use your own watermark
  • Leave the input blank to remove the watermark entirely

Your watermark setting is remembered in the browser, so it stays the same next time you use the app on that device.

The watermark appears:

  • in the preview
  • in exported GIFs

Exporting

When you press Export, Brush Ninja creates an animated GIF from your frames.

The export uses:

  • your current frame order
  • your chosen frame rate
  • each frame’s individual duration
  • your current watermark setting

If your animation feels too fast or too slow after export, adjust the frame rate or the x1/x2/x3 frame durations and export again.

Tips for Better Stop Motion

  • Keep the camera as still as possible
  • Move your subject only a small amount between frames
  • Use even lighting to avoid flicker
  • Capture more frames for smoother animation
  • Use longer frame durations for pauses
  • Preview often while you work

For very small movements, onion skin can help you judge how far the subject has moved.

If Something Goes Wrong

If the camera does not start:

  • check that your browser has permission to use the camera
  • make sure no other app is blocking the camera
  • try tapping the canvas again
  • try refreshing the page if the browser lost camera access

If the animation looks jumpy:

  • capture more frames
  • make smaller movements between frames
  • use the onion skin overlay to line up each shot

If the timing feels wrong:

  • lower the frame rate to slow everything down
  • increase a frame duration from x1 to x2 or higher to hold on a frame longer

If export fails:

  • try a shorter animation first
  • close other tabs if your device is low on memory
  • export again after waiting a moment
