How to create a mini book

The Mini Book Maker lets you create a tiny 16-page book from a single A4 printout.

Add a title and author, then write the contents of your book one page at a time. You can see a preview of the finished book as you work.

Each page can contain up to 256 characters. You can also use simple Markdown to add formatting such as bold and italic text.

When your book is finished, print it out and assemble it into a real miniature book.

Printing your book

Print your book on A4 paper at Actual size / 100%. Do not use “Fit to page”, as this may change the size of the pieces.

The printout contains everything you need to make your book:

  • The printed book cover
  • Concertina page strips with endpapers
  • Templates for the two cover boards and spine
  • Assembly instructions

You will also need some thin card for the cover. A cereal box or similar packaging works well.

How to make your mini book

  1. Cut out all the pieces.
  2. Cut the cover boards. Use the templates to cut two covers and one spine from thin card.
  3. Make the cover. Glue the two cover boards and spine to the back of the printed cover. Fold and glue the cover flaps over the card.
  4. Fold the pages. Fold each page strip back and forth like a concertina. Pre-creasing the folds with a blunt tool can make this easier.
  5. Join the page strips. Glue the ends of the strips together to make one long concertina.
  6. Glue the spine. Fold the pages into a stack and clamp them together. Apply glue along the spine edge and leave it to dry.
  7. Add the pages. Glue the first and last blank pages to the endpapers. Clamp the finished book closed and leave it to dry.

Once everything is dry, your tiny book is ready to read.

Tips for a neater book

For the best results, score or pre-crease the fold lines before folding them. A ruler and a blunt tool can help you make straight, crisp folds.

Use glue sparingly. Too much glue can wrinkle the paper or squeeze out around the edges.

When gluing the spine and assembling the finished book, clamp the pieces together until the glue is completely dry. Small binder clips work well for this.
